What a wireframe settles

A wireframe is for agreeing on structure before anyone argues about colours:

• What’s on the page. Which KPIs, which charts, which filters.
• Where it goes. Most important top-left, detail at the bottom.
• How much space each gets. Which usually shows what matters most.

Because it’s just boxes, it’s cheap to change. Moving a chart takes seconds, not a rebuild.

A common dashboard layout

The example above follows the pattern most business dashboards use:

1. Title and filters across the top
2. A KPI row, the summary
3. Main charts, a trend plus a breakdown
4. A detail table at the bottom

Best practices

• Start from the questions, not the charts. Write down the 3–5 questions the dashboard must answer, then give each one a box.
• Stay grey. Colour at this stage makes people react to styling instead of structure.
• Use the real canvas size (usually 16:9) so the layout survives when it’s built.

From wireframe to mockup

Once the layout is agreed, swap the grey boxes for real chart types and sample data to turn it into a mockup that stakeholders can sign off on.
